Basics of Anatomy, Pathology, Periodontal Disease, Analgesia and Extractions

Cost: TBC

Who can attend: Veterinarians ideally with a small animal (dog and cat) practice, so they have had some experience in dentistry already.

Venue: Shanghai - TBC

2 day class (8 attendees per course)

Day 1:

  • 0800 – 1200 Lectures (translated) covering Anatomy, pathology, charting, periodontal disease, scaling, root planing, polishing.
  • 1300 – 1700 Practical
  • 0800 – 0845 Anatomy, pathology
  • 0845 – 0930 Charting, probing
  • 0930 – 0945 Break
  • 0945 – 1030 Periodontal disease
  • 1030 – 1115 Scaling, polishing
  • 1115 – 1200 Root planing
  • 1200 – 1300 Lunchtime
  • 1300 – 1430 Practical skills for feline covering charting (recording the pathology seen in the mouth on a dental chart), periodontal skills – scaling, root planing/curettage, polishing.
  • 1430 – 1445 – Break
  • 1445 – 1630 Practical skills for canine covering charting (recording the pathology seen in the mouth on a dental chart), periodontal skills – scaling, root planing/curettage, polishing, periodontal pockets.
  • 1630 – 1700 Correct use, care and sharpening of hand instruments and the maintenance of the dental machine.

After Day 1, the skills achieved will include: the ability to thoroughly recognise pathology, record it on a dental chart, clean the teeth using ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments. Decide if a tooth with periodontal disease is able to be treated and saved or whether it needs to be extracted. If the tooth can be treated, the veterinarian will be able to scale, polish, root plane and polish the diseased tooth. The attendees will also be taught how to look after their instruments so that the procedures are performed successfully and their equipment is maintained, sterilised and extending its work life.

Day 2

  • 0800 – 1100 Lectures (translated) covering local nerve blocks and extractions
  • 1200 – 1700 Practical
  • 0800 – 0900 – Nerve blocks

  • 0945 – 1000 Break
  • 1000 – 1100 Extractions for multi-rooted teeth
  • 1100 – 1200 Lunchtime

  • 1445 – 1500 Break
  • 1500 – 1700 Extractions for the canine dog including

After Day 2, the veterinarian will be able to successfully place a nerve block to ensure the patient receives adequate analgesia. They will learn how to atraumatically extract single rooted incisor/pre-molar teeth, section double rooted pre-molar teeth and the techniques to make a muco-gingival flap and preform osteoplasty to extract canine and 4th premolar teeth. The concept of synthetic bone placement and wound healing including where to make incisions for gingival flaps to ensure complete healing will be taught.

Attendees will be required to read the notes, supplied prior to the workshop, as well as, watch the videos before attending the course. The lectures at the course will be an overview of the notes and give information to successfully complete the procedures in the workshop, so attendees will be able to confidently perform these afterwards in their practices.

All attendees MUST be Veterinarians, ideally with a small animal (dog and cat) practice, so they have had some experience in dentistry already.

On completion of the course, each veterinarian will have the knowledge to diagnose dental pathology, treat periodontal disease using ultrasonic and hand instruments, give analgesia and extract most teeth in the cat and dog.
